http://www.myspace.com/avantgardefolkclub About me: Avant-garde Folk Club History of the project In March 2004 a first step to develop an international centre for contemporary ethnical music in the Armenian capital Yerevan was carried out: Avant-garde Folk Club was opened. Besides the Armenian Navy Band under the direction of Arto Tuncboyaciyan also numerous Armenian formations among others the Vache Hovzepyan Duduk Quintet, the New Folk Formation Mihr, a mixed choir of the conservatory of Yerevan with Komitas interpretations, played on the occasion of the opening. For this occasion a 15 person delegation with international music journalists of important European daily and music newspapers, radio stations, internet portals (among others Volkskrant, TAZ, WDR, Batonga, Mondomix) as well as directors of European World Music and Jazz Festivals had arrived to Armenia, so that the event attracted great interest in the Armenian media, in the print- and audiovisual media of the Caucasian neighbouring countries and even in Europe. On the occasion of the 90th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey on 24th of April 2005 an international concert series in Avant-garde Folk Club was applied with the following artists: •Ifrikya – Electronic-Gnawa-Jazz-Formation (Maghreb/France) •Aly Keita – Magician of the Balaphon (Mali) •Kristi Stassinopoulou - Diva of Poetry (Greece) •Time Report - Brass band (Armenia) •Katuner - New Jazz (Armenia) •Armenian Navy Band & Guests A part of this program was a special benefit concert with participation of all artists for Armenian orphans due to wars and earthquakes and in favour of the NGO “Mer Doon”, which attends to the build-up of living and training projects for orphans and young people in Armenia. Avant-garde Folk Club Avant-garde Folk Club is located in the building of Armenian Journalist Union and is an again opened up, independent concert hall in the heart of the Armenian capital Yerevan. In a first step and through personal contribution - without any national or other public support - a small hall for approx. 140 spectators was renovated following international standards as well as various adjoining rooms (dressing rooms, offices, bar etc.). The second hall for 300 spectators with a 12m x 15m of large stage has been put on stream in October 2005. Programmatic goal of Avant-garde Folk Club is: •to release systematically a way to adequate artistic co-operation partners in a globalised music world for Armenian musicians •to introduce the existing ethnical music and bands of Armenia to a larger audience in Europe• •to evolve Avant-garde Folk Club into a laboratory for innovative music in Yerevan •to establish Avant-garde Folk Club as a contact point for the international music scene of contemporary ethnical music in Armenia •to integrate Avant-garde Folk Club into the International-Jazz club-Network (members are among others: Stadtgarten Köln, Pfefferberg Berlin, Babylon Istanbul, Knitting Factory / New York) in order to organise and produce international guest performance tours and festivals •to promote in a time of the globalisation the local ethnical music of the country as an important human resource since this contributes to the self-confident identity and in this way to a positive development of the ancient culture region Caucasus.
